The competitions take place throughout northern Italy. In addition to Milan and Cortina, competitions are also held in Antholz, Bormio, Livigno, Predazzo, and Tesero. Olympics 2026 Forecast: Where Will Germany End Up?

With a total of 435 medals (including 162 gold), Germany leads the all-time medal table of the Winter Olympics. In 2006, the German team was able to secure first place in the medal table for the last time. They came second in 2010, 201,8 and 2022. This time, the goal has once again been to place in the top 3. Germany is sending 184 athletes to Italy, more than ever before. We have good memories of the southern European host country. 20 years ago in Turin, the German Olympians ended up at the top of the medal table. The German athletes are likely to collect some medals this time, especially in tobogganing, bobsleighing and skeleton. Johannes Lochner and Laura Nolte are among the big favorites here.

In the skeleton, defending champion Christopher Grotheer (33) and silver medalist Axel Jungk (34) have good chances in the individual. The Germans also want to be on the podium in the disciplines of biathlon, alpine skiing and cross-country skiing. Vinzenz Geiger (Nordic combination), Minerva Hase & Nikita Volodin (figure skating), Emma Aicher (Alpine skiing) and the German ski jumpers could also contribute to a “rain of medals”.

Will The Top Favorite Norway Live Up To Its Role?

Norway has already been the best nation in the medal table at three of the last four Winter Olympics. From 2014 (11 gold, 6 silver, 10 bronze) to 2018 (14 gold, 14 silver, 11 bronze) to 2022 (16 gold, 8 silver, 13 bronze) the Scandinavians were able to improve continuously.

The Norwegians are traditionally extremely strong in competitions such as biathlon, cross-country skiing and Nordic combined. But this time the Northern Europeans have to make do without Johannes Thingnes Bö’s medals. Johannes Hosflot Klaebo is supposed to step into the breach in cross-country skiing. He has a realistic chance of winning four or more gold medals.

Jarl Magnus Riiber is the top favorite in the Nordic Combined individual competitions. And in the men’s slalom, the country is hoping for Atle Lie McGrath. In the biathlon, the men’s relay team and Johan-Olav Botn will be difficult to beat. But is it enough for first place in the medal rankings again?

Will Canada Return To The Top 5?

The bookmakers also include the USA and Canada among the extended favorites. The Canadians are currently in fourth place at Interwetten. The North Americans only had to settle for eleventh place (4 gold, 8 silver, 14 bronze) at the last edition of the Winter Olympics. This time the aim is to return to the top 5.

Especially in short-track speed skating with Steven Dubois, you have to have the maple leaves on your list. Athletes like Reece Howden, Julien Viel and Naomi Urness could also win some medals in freestyle skiing. Canada is also traditionally strong in ice hockey and curling. But in the end, we don’t think anything more than 4th or 5th place is really possible.

The USA Impresses With Its Consistency

The US Winter Olympians are the most consistent team in recent decades. Only the USA has always made it into the top five in the medal rankings since 1992. In five consecutive Olympic Games, the US Boys and Girls have won exactly nine gold medals. And this year, too, you have to have the stars and stripes on the bill.

The Americans are traditionally strong, especially in snowboarding, freestyle skiing, and bobsledding. In figure skating, there are extremely high hopes for Nathan Chen and Lindsey Jacobellis. In speed skating, Jordan Stolz is the favorite to win multiple individual gold medals. In cross-country skiing, Jessie Diggins is a candidate for the podium. The USA also sends many NHL stars to the men’s hockey tournament. Lindsey Vonn and Mikaela Shiffrin want to win a precious metal while skiing.

Can The Host Surprise Italy?

Of course, you can’t take your eyes off the host either. The home advantage at the Olympics often ensures that extra strength can be mobilized. Italy took ninth place in Turin 2006, Canada won in Vancouver 2010, Russia came second in Sochi 2014, South Korea came seventh in PyeongChang 2018, and China narrowly missed the top three in 2022.

Athletes like alpine skier Sofia Goggia are always good for a medal on home soil. For example, Goggia only won the downhill classic in Cortina d’Ampezzo in mid-January. But across the board, Italy doesn’t have enough strong athletes to cause a big surprise. The “Azzurri” can definitely be trusted to finish 5th as bookmaker Interwetten said.
