It was the hit of last year’s Fringe Festival. Now it is a six-part webseries.
Six, a musical about six guys from Jersey trying to make their rock band “big,” comes from the people who brought you the Broadway musical Spring Awakening. Six was the “Best of Fringe” winner last summer in Edinburgh and took Director Kurt Deutsch from being an unknown to a hot property in a matter of weeks after its premiere.

The Story
Six the musical takes place in New Jersey and tells the story of six best friends who are trying to make their rock band go big. They all live in New Jersey, have day jobs but are eager to take their music beyond the bar circuit where they’ve been playing for years. The show follows them on this journey while exploring themes of friendship, ambition, and fame.
The show won awards for Best Musical (Edinburgh Festival), “Award for Innovation” (Edinburgh Festival), and the award for ‘Best New Musical’ in London’s 2010 Laurence Olivier Awards to its run.
Six the Musical on Broadway
The musical debuted on Broadway at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, after opening in London’s West End. Previews began March 14, 2010 with an opening night of April 17, 2010. The show closed on May 31, 2011 after 312 performances and 38 previews.
Six is directed by Michael Mayer with choreography by Patrick McCollum, set design by David Farley, costume design by Susan Hilferty, lighting design by Kevin Adams and hair and wig design by Tom Watson.
The show features over 30 songs with music and lyrics by Duncan Sheik and a book written collaboratively between Sheik and Steven Sater. The musical was workshopped at the Sundance Theatre Lab in January 2007.
The Musical opened to mixed reviews from critics. Ben Brantley wrote a positive review for The New York Times, writing: “At the end of ‘Six,’ an exhilarating new musical at the Al Hirschfeld Theater that is as much a hymn to rock-and-roll dreams as it is a drama, the hero, a young singer-songwriter named Evan, steps to the lip of the stage and stares down at a room full of strangers. “You’re all here because you need something more,” he tells them. And then he sings: “You’re all here because you don’t know what you want.”
In September 2011 it was announced that the show would transfer to Broadway in a limited engagement at the Jacobs Theatre in March 2012.
Six The Musical is slated to open on Broadway in March, but you can watch it right now on YouTube!
Conclusion
I just finished watching the first episode, and I’m hooked. I love how it is on YouTube because you can watch all of it today! And if you have some time to spare tonight, I highly recommend checking it out. The first episode is only about 30 minutes long (or an hour with commercials), so its less than a movie. Plus, you get to see if the show is something that appeals to you before committing to a night of watching.
